Natural Water Retention Measures (NWRM) are measures that aim to safeguard and enhance the water storage potential of landscapes, soils and aquifers, by restoring ecosystems, natural features and characteristics of water courses, and by using natural processes. They are green infrastructure solutions which support adaptation to climate change by reducing the vulnerability of water resources.
The NWRM initiative is a project of the Directorate-General for Environment of the European Commission, aiming at collaboratively building knowledge and promoting best practice on Natural Water Retention Measures in Europe.
After more than two years, the final project outcomes are now available. You can find the practical guide “to support the selection, design and implementation of Natural Water Retention Measures in Europe” as well as NWRM identity cards for each individual measure here.
